The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially terminated its broadcast partnership with StarTimes, a Chinese pay-TV broadcaster. This decision comes after the expiration of their agreement at the end of the 2023/24 football season.
Despite ongoing discussions to renew the contract since the season's conclusion, both parties have been unable to reach an agreement on new terms. The GFA confirmed that all negotiations were brought to a close in March 2025, marking an end to a partnership that began in 2017.
StarTimes entered the Ghanaian market in 2016 and became GFA’s official broadcast partner just a year later. Over these years, this collaboration provided extensive coverage for various domestic competitions including the Ghana Premier League matches.
Financial disagreements surface
However, this termination has also brought financial disagreements between both parties into light. The GFA is now seeking to recover an outstanding debt of USD 842,173.36 which it claims is owed by StarTimes under their previous agreement.
To reclaim this substantial sum, legal counsel has been retained and formal proceedings have begun against StarTimes. This move indicates serious financial disputes that may have contributed towards ending their broadcasting relationship.
Search for new media partner
In light of these developments, GFA remains committed to finding a new media partner that can offer fair and transparent arrangements beneficial for all stakeholders involved - clubs, fans and broader football community alike.
In its statement regarding this matter, GFA emphasized its dedication towards serving interests of everyone involved in Ghana's football scene through future partnerships. It aims at ensuring comprehensive coverage of domestic competitions while maintaining financial transparency and fairness.
This development marks a significant shift in Ghana's sports broadcasting landscape as one chapter closes with another set to begin soon as they search for new partners who align better with their objectives.
