Tickets usually costing $12.90 (£9.50) were increased to $150 for the tournament, before being lowered to $98

Germany's national football team have taken a remarkable step to support their fans amidst criticism of high transport costs at the World Cup stadiums. The players have decided to pay for 600 of their fans' bus travel to the final group game, demonstrating an extraordinary act of generosity.

The decision comes in response to the exorbitant increase in train ticket prices from central New York to Met Life stadium in New Jersey, where Germany is scheduled to play Ecuador on June 25th. Normally priced at $12.90 (£9.50), these tickets were hiked up to $150 for the tournament before being slightly reduced back down to $98.

German FA released statement:

"In light of the high cost of bus and train travel in New York during the World Cup, the German national team players have organised free transport to the final group match for 600 fans,"

"Captain Joshua Kimmich and his team-mates are covering the cost of buses to take supporters from New York to the arena in New Jersey for the match against Ecuador."

Similarly, shuttle bus fares that would typically cost around $80 for a similar journey were initially inflated but have since been dropped down to a more reasonable price of $20.

FIFA refuses subsidy

The New Jersey governor attributed these inflated prices due largely because FIFA has refused any subsidy towards transport expenditure. This stands in stark contrast with previous World Cups held in Russia and Qatar where free transport was readily available for fans attending games and fan zones.

In fact, as part of its host agreement made back in 2018, the US had committed itself towards offering this same perk. However, an amendment made five years later saw supporters being charged at cost value instead. Despite these challenges, Germany players have stepped up and decided they will cover the travel expenses for 600 lucky fans who can now attend their final Group E match against Ecuador without worrying about transportation costs.

This gesture not only alleviates some financial burden off their supporters but also sends out a strong message about player-fan solidarity and commitment towards ensuring that everyone gets an equal opportunity at enjoying this global sporting event. This move by Germany's players is a testament to their dedication towards their fans and serves as a reminder that sports are not just about competition, but also about community and shared experiences.
