Lineker, Shearer, and Richards will cover this year's World Cup on Netflix, promising broader global exposure than Euro 2024 coverage in Berlin

Former Match of the Day host, Gary Lineker, is set to make a significant shift in his career. The renowned sports presenter will be moving from the BBC to Netflix this summer, providing coverage of the World Cup alongside Alan Shearer and Micah Richards.

Lineker insists he has no regrets about leaving the BBC before the World Cup. He is excited about being on location in the United States rather than broadcasting from "a green box in Salford". The 65-year-old was a familiar face on Match of the Day for many years before announcing plans to step down in November 2024.

He had initially planned to stay with the corporation until after their coverage of this summer's World Cup and FA Cup. However, an unexpected turn of events led him to leave his position earlier than planned at the end of 2024-25 season following an antisemitism row that erupted after he re-shared a social media post.

Success beyond television

After leaving television broadcasting, Lineker found success elsewhere - specifically within podcasting. His popular show 'The Rest Is Football' was purchased by Netflix for £14 million. This show features his former Match of The Day colleagues Alan Shearer and Micah Richards.

This summer, viewers can expect daily episodes covering all things related to World Cup on Netflix instead of traditional TV channels like BBC. Moreover, Lineker seems thrilled about being based out New York's Times Square as opposed to Salford where his former employers are located due cost-saving measures.

Gary Lineker, Premier League legend, said:

“I was originally going to do it for the BBC, this summer, but that didn’t transpire and I would have been in Salford in a green box and now I’m going to be in New York City overlooking Times Square with lots of great guests,”

Global audience awaits

Lineker along with Shearer and Richards have previously covered Euro 2024 held in Berlin but this year’s edition for World Cup promises more global exposure as it will be broadcasted across US, Canada and Mexico via Netflix’s platform which boasts a worldwide audience reach.

Lineker, a former England striker, is known for his candid remarks. He stirred controversy during the Euros after criticizing England's performance following a 1-1 draw with Denmark. Despite the backlash, Lineker has no plans to hold back his opinions and promises to continue sharing authentic views on Thomas Tuchel's side.

Gary Lineker’s move from BBC to Netflix signifies an exciting shift in sports broadcasting. As he embarks on this new journey with Netflix, fans can look forward to more of his unfiltered commentary and insights into the world of football.
