Despite the absence of team, India's rapidly growing football market accounted for 2.9% of FIFA’s global audience during the 2022 World Cup

Indian football fans have been in a state of uncertainty regarding the broadcast rights for the FIFA World Cup 2026. However, recent developments suggest that clarity may be on the horizon.

Shaji Prabhakaran, former general secretary of All India Football Federation (AIFF), recently claimed that negotiations for India's broadcasting rights are complete. He announced via social media that an official broadcaster announcement is expected as early as next week. This news comes as a sigh of relief to millions of Indian football fans who have been anxiously waiting to know if they will be able to watch one of the world's most significant sporting events without disruption.

The lack of an official broadcaster announcement with less than three weeks until kick-off had sparked widespread questions and concerns among Indian football enthusiasts. Public broadcaster Prasar Bharati further intensified these concerns when it clarified during proceedings in Delhi High Court that it was not responsible for acquiring broadcast rights for the tournament.

India is considered a rapidly growing football market, making this uncertainty even more alarming. According to Reuters, despite its national team's absence from the competition, India accounted for 2.9 per cent of FIFA’s global audience reach during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Optimism amid uncertainty

Despite these uncertainties, optimism persisted within Indian football circles with many believing a resolution would eventually emerge before kick-off. AIFF has acknowledged fan concerns but clarified that commercial negotiations involving media rights are outside its direct jurisdiction. Satyanarayan, AIFF deputy general secretary recently underlined India’s significance in global football ecosystem suggesting it would be difficult for either FIFA or broadcasters to ignore such a major market indefinitely.

Prabhakaran’s latest claim aligns with this assessment; however there has been no official confirmation yet from FIFA or any broadcasting network. If the reported breakthrough materialises, it would bring relief to millions of Indian fans eager to follow what promises to be the biggest World Cup in history. The 2026 edition is set to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

While there is still some uncertainty surrounding the broadcast rights for FIFA World Cup 2026 in India, recent developments suggest that an announcement may be imminent. This news will undoubtedly bring joy and relief to millions of football fans across India who are eagerly waiting for this historic event.
