The former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder becomes the Blues' third manager appointment of the season

Chelsea have officially confirmed the appointment of Xabi Alonso as their new head coach on a four-year contract running until June 2030, ending weeks of speculation and bringing one of European football's most coveted managers to Stamford Bridge.

Alonso, 44, left Real Madrid by mutual consent in January following a 3-2 defeat to Barcelona in the Supercopa de España final and has been available since. Chelsea's sporting director David Fallows — a former Liverpool head of scouting — moved swiftly to secure his signature, convincing Alonso that the Stamford Bridge project offered the control and long-term vision he demanded from his next role.

Big challenge for Alonso

Alonso will formally begin his role on July 1, taking charge for pre-season and the 2026-27 Premier League campaign. Alonso's appointment at Chelsea will sting Liverpool supporters who had hoped the former Anfield hero would return to Merseyside as Arne Slot's successor. Multiple reports confirmed on Saturday that Liverpool "never made contact" with Alonso at any stage, a decision that has drawn fierce criticism from supporters given Slot's difficult season.

Xabi Alonso, Chelsea manager, said:

"Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club. From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies."

The Telegraph's Dominic King confirmed that FSG remained "unyielding in their support of Slot" and that an approach for Alonso "was never made." Chelsea's Fallows — who spent 12 years at Liverpool before being overlooked for a sporting director role — is understood to have been the key figure who secured the deal.
