For the average person, investment may come in the form of trading stocks or shares, purchasing property or having a flutter on some of the top crypto sports betting sites, but for Hollywood A-List actor Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac (formerly McElhenney), it means pumping millions of pounds into Wrexham.
Wrexham are making waves in the Championship this summer with a series of high-profile signings. The club's aggressive spending strategy, which has seen it shell out over £20 million on new players, signals its intent to compete at the highest level and continue its rapid ascent in English football.
After three successive promotions, many thought they might take their foot on the gas and focus on consolidating in the Championship. After already making history with the three-peat, few could have imagined they would be pushing this hard to try and make it four consecutive promotions and reach the holy grail of the Premier League.
Record breaking summer signings
The club's most recent acquisition, forward Nathan Broadhead from Ipswich City, is a testament to Reynolds and Mac's ambitious plans. The former Wrexham youth player was signed for a whopping £7.5 million upfront, with an additional £2.5 million potentially due in performance-related add-ons.
This deal more than doubles the club's previous transfer fee record set earlier this summer when they signed Lewis O’Brien for around £3 million.
Broadhead is the ninth player to join Wrexham this summer, pushing the club's total spending past the £20 million mark. This spending spree is a clear indication that Wrexham, fresh off a historic three consecutive promotions, are not planning to slow down anytime soon.
Wrexham hoping to reach the Premier League in super speed?
Wrexham's spending is not only ambitious but also competitive. The club's investment in new players is on par with its Championship rivals, positioning it as a serious contender for a place in the EFL Championship automatic promotion places or playoffs.
Norwich City, for instance, have spent slightly more on transfers than Wrexham but have also sold players for significant fees.
Wrexham, on the other hand, have not made nearly as much from player sales.
Even Birmingham City, the other Championship side with famous owners (Tom Brady & co) have spent less on transfers than Wrexham.
Could there be more transfers on the horizon?
With the summer transfer window not closing until 1st September, there could still be more signings to come in to Wrexham.
Reports have suggested that the ownership has set aside £30m for summer spending, and so there is still plenty of scope for new recruits.
After narrowly losing their first two fixtures of the 2025-26 EFL Championship season, 2-1 to Southampton and 3-2 to West Brom, Phil Parkinson's side are clearly ready to compete with the clubs in the second tier, but perhaps a few more reinforcements could see them go from competing to excelling.
