Wayne Rooney, a Manchester United icon, is reportedly in talks for a significant new role on television following his dismissal from Plymouth Argyle at the beginning of January. After an unsuccessful stint as manager, it seems that Rooney is ready to turn away from management and explore other opportunities.
Rooney's tenure at Plymouth was marked by a series of defeats and he failed to secure an away game victory with the South Coast side. His managerial record has been less than stellar; after disappointing performances with DC United and Birmingham City - where he was sacked after just 15 games - it appears unlikely that he will make a swift return to management.
Potential return to broadcasting
In between his managerial roles, Wayne Rooney has proven himself as an insightful pundit for various broadcasters. Having spent time with BBC during Euro 2024 last summer, there are now indications that he may be set to make a return.
According to The Sun, negotiations are underway for Rooney to join BBC's flagship programme 'Match of the Day' as a pundit. This comes after Gary Lineker's departure as host at the end of this season.
The revamped show will feature Gabby Logan, Mark Chapman and Kelly Cates replacing Lineker. If successful in his bid, Rooney would join this presenting trio as one of the programme's rotating guest pundits.
Promising negotiations
While these negotiations are still in their early stages they have been described as 'looking promising'. It is suggested that if successful, Wayne could command an annual wage of £200k depending on how many appearances he makes on Match Of The Day.
Rooney is currently taking some time out from football management roles while considering what direction his career should take next. Punditry seems like one viable option given his previous experience and popularity among viewers. Rooney's previous broadcasting experience during Euro 2024 was well received by viewers. He had to cut his work short to start at Plymouth, but it seems that the BBC and other broadcasters are keen on bringing him back on board.
BBC's director of sport, Alex Kay-Jelski has hinted at a number of surprises lined up for Match of the Day viewers ahead of next season. Could Rooney be one of those surprises? Only time will tell.
