Rashford, after spending the latter half of the previous season on loan at Aston Villa, is now thriving in his current position at Barcelona

Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has publicly expressed his doubts over Marcus Rashford's claim that an inconsistent environment was the reason for his lackluster performance with the Red Devils.

Marcus Rashford, who made his debut for Manchester United in 2016, scored a total of 138 goals in 426 matches. His impressive performance led to him winning five major trophies with the club. However, despite scoring 30 goals across all competitions during the 2022-23 season, he failed to maintain this form and subsequently fell out of favour.

Rashford spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa before moving to Barcelona where he is currently flourishing. In a recent interview, he attributed his previous underperformance to being in an "inconsistent environment for a very long time".

Rooney's response

Wayne Rooney addressed these claims on The Wayne Rooney Show. As a former captain and one of Manchester United’s most celebrated players, he offered an alternative perspective on Rashford’s situation.

Former Manchester United captain, Wayne Rooney, said:

"I think the environment hasn't been right but that is down to yourself. If you are not playing well or you get left out of the team then I think it is easier to blame the environment and whether that is right or wrong. I think that comes from how you apply yourself.

"In games we have seen with him where we know he can do more, we know he can run more - that is nothing to do with an environment. I might be wrong here, I really like Marcus as a lad and as a person but I think that is an easy one to throw at people."

Rooney does not believe that the environment was responsible for Rashford's inability to consistently perform well at Manchester United. He suggested that other factors could have contributed more significantly towards this issue. This discussion between two prominent figures within football offers valuable insights into how different perspectives can shape our understanding of player performance within professional sports teams. It also highlights the importance of considering multiple factors when evaluating a player's performance, rather than attributing it to a single cause.
