Man Utd initially intended Carrick's role to be temporary, but growing fan support for him as permanent boss has complicated matters for INEOS

Former England and Manchester United striker, Wayne Rooney, has voiced his support for interim boss Michael Carrick to be named the next permanent manager of Manchester United. According to Rooney, Carrick "should 100%" take up the mantle ahead of the upcoming season.

Michael Carrick has placed himself in a prime position to be considered for the role of Man Utd's next permanent manager. His impressive performance since taking over as interim boss is hard to ignore. Out of ten matches under his leadership, he has led the team to victory in seven games.

Carrick's simple yet effective changes have sparked an instant upturn in results and performances. The Red Devils now look set on course to qualify for the Champions League under his guidance.

Fan support and club legend status

Initially, Man Utd planned only a temporary tenure for Carrick until summer. However, this club legend has put INEOS in a difficult position due to growing fan support clamouring for him as their next permanent boss.

The situation is further complicated by Thomas Tuchel and Carlo Ancelotti removing themselves from consideration as potential successors. This leaves room open for speculation about who will take over at Old Trafford. Rooney isn't alone in endorsing Carrick; former Man Utd striker Michael Owen also agrees with him. Owen dismissed suggestions that Carrick "shouldn't continue" as "stupid", adding weight behind Rooney's endorsement.

Wayne Rooney, Manchester United legend, said:

“100% he should [get the job]. I have said this. I knew this was going to happen with Michael Carrick. I know him very well. I know his character, his personality. It needed a calm head, but someone who knows the place and the players needed some love, and he has given them that.

“We have seen the players play with more quality, more together as a team, and they look like a very strong team. For me, why would you change?

“He has got the best winning percentage of any Manchester United manager after that many games. For me, he has to get the job.”

Paul Scholes too had named his “perfect” successor but did not elaborate further on this matter. Although he didn’t go into specifics about why he believes so strongly that it should be Carrick leading Manchester United beyond this season, it’s clear that both his personal experience with Carrick and the latter's recent performance have influenced Rooney’s opinion.

The decision on who will be Man Utd's next permanent boss is a significant one. With endorsements from football legends like Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen, it seems that Michael Carrick has a strong chance of securing the position. His impressive record as interim boss, coupled with his status as a club legend and fan favourite, make him an appealing choice for the role.
