Tottenham Hotspur is currently in discussions with RB Leipzig to extend the loan deal for forward Timo Werner for another season. The former Chelsea player, who has found a new lease on life at Spurs, could be staying in London longer than initially planned.
Werner joined Tottenham in January on an initial loan deal that was set to last until the end of the season. During his time back in London, he managed to score two goals across 13 appearances in Premier League matches. This agreement included an option for Tottenham to finalize a permanent transfer this summer with a fee estimated around £15 million.
However, recent developments suggest that Spurs are more interested in extending Werner’s loan by another year rather than opting for a permanent transfer at this stage.
A valuable asset under Postecoglou
The 28-year-old German striker has proven himself as a valuable asset under manager Ange Postecoglou's leadership and is keen on remaining with the club. Having endured a challenging two-year spell at Chelsea between 2020-22 before returning to Leipzig, Werner seems eager to continue his tenure at Spurs after regaining some form during the second half of the season.
Postecoglou expressed optimism about retaining Werner earlier this month but did not provide further details about ongoing negotiations or potential terms of extension.
Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham manager, said:
“Timo we signed until the end of the season on loan and he's part of that strategy to see what we need to do in the summer and can we do it. Are there going to be other gaps and where does Timo fit in with that strategy? So we have a plan in place, and that was irrespective. I think he's been very good for us.
“We were short in wide areas. Him coming in was very helpful for us and I think he’s made an impact but in my mind to make those definitive decisions, I still need some clarity about what we’ve got here first.”
Brandon Austin also handed extension
In other news from Tottenham Hotspur, third-choice goalkeeper Brandon Austin has confirmed signing a new contract with the club. On Tuesday, Austin put pen to paper on an impressive five-year extension which will keep him at Spurs until summer 2029.
As negotiations continue and contracts get signed, it's clear that there are exciting times ahead for both players and fans alike as they look forward towards next season.
