A 27-year-old man has made history as the first individual to be charged under a new law against 'tailgating' - entering a football match without a ticket. This incident occurred after the Carabao Cup final at Wembley, marking an important milestone in the enforcement of this newly introduced legislation.
The new law came into effect on Sunday, just hours before Manchester City secured their victory over Arsenal with a 2-0 win in the final. Benjamin Bailey, 27, from Fifth Avenue in Oldham, Manchester is set to appear at Willesden Magistrates' Court on Friday, May 1st for his alleged offence.
In addition to Bailey's case, two other men were arrested on suspicion of committing the same offence at Wembley and are currently being held in custody. Furthermore, another man was arrested for suspected tailgating during Tottenham's 3-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He has been released on bail pending further investigation.
Consequences of tailgating
Those found guilty of tailgating could face severe consequences including:
- A football banning order lasting up to five years
- A fine reaching up to £1,000
These stringent measures have been put into place as part of efforts to prevent serious disorder during football matches. This legislation was introduced following significant disorder that marred the European Championship final between England and Italy at Wembley in July 2021. During this event thousands of fans forced their way into the stadium without tickets causing chaos and disruption.
The act aims to clamp down on supporters who attempt entry without tickets by closely following legitimate ticket-holders through turnstiles. This move is expected not only to enhance security but also ensure fairness among fans who purchase their tickets legitimately.
The enforcement of this new law marks a significant step in the fight against disorderly conduct at football matches. It serves as a warning to those considering tailgating and underscores the seriousness with which authorities are addressing this issue. As sports fans and sports betting enthusiasts, it is crucial to understand these changes and respect the rules for an enjoyable, fair, and safe sporting experience.
