Referee halted the game for three minutes as per anti-discrimination protocol, conversed with coaching staffs, Geertruida and Xhaka, then resumed play

The Tyne-Wear derby between Newcastle and Sunderland was temporarily halted on Sunday following allegations of racial abuse directed towards visiting player Lutsharel Geertruida. The incident, which occurred at St James' Park, has sparked an investigation by both the club and the Premier League.

During the 52nd minute of the match, play was already paused due to an injury to Newcastle player Sven Botman. It was during this break that Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka approached referee Anthony Taylor with a report of racism from someone in the crowd towards Dutch defender Geertruida.

Referee Taylor subsequently stopped the game for three minutes in accordance with Premier League's on-field anti-discrimination protocol. He then spoke to both sets of coaching staff, as well as Geertruida and Xhaka before restarting play.

Investigation underway

Newcastle United has pledged to investigate these allegations thoroughly. In a statement released after the match, they expressed their commitment to ensuring that all players are treated with respect and dignity while playing at St James' Park.

Newcastle released statement:

"We are aware of a report of racism made by a visiting player against someone in the crowd during our Premier League match against Sunderland. Our stance is clear - we do not tolerate discrimination of any form.

"We will work with the authorities to fully investigate and will ensure any individuals are identified and held accountable.

The Premier League also confirmed that it would be conducting a full investigation into this incident. A spokesperson for Northumbria Police added that they were "aware of a report of discriminatory abuse" and would be looking into it further. In addition to this disturbing incident during play, police reported one arrest prior to kick-off following reports of sporadic fighting among fans. This adds another layer of concern regarding fan behaviour at football matches.

Northumbria Police released statement:

"We are aware of a number of videos circulating on social media in relation to Newcastle United and Sunderland supporters goading one another. In the main, everyone has co-operated and we are able to report that one arrest was made ahead of kick-off,"

Racism has no place in sport or society at large; such incidents tarnish not only individual games but also undermine sportsmanship's very essence. As investigations continue into this unfortunate event during Sunday's Tyne-Wear derby, it is hoped that appropriate actions will be taken to ensure such incidents do not recur. The football community, including sports fans and sports betting fans, will undoubtedly be watching closely as the situation unfolds.
