The former Liverpool and England captain, is well-known to Rangers fans due to his stint as their manager from 2018-2021

Steven Gerrard, the former Ibrox boss, recently revealed that he was on the brink of returning to Rangers as manager. However, he ultimately declined the role due to certain imperfections. This revelation comes in light of his discussions with the Scottish Premiership club following Russell Martin's dismissal last month. Despite being "very close" and having his "heart 100% there", Gerrard chose to withdraw from the process.

Gerrard is no stranger to Rangers or its fans. The former Liverpool and England captain served as Rangers' manager between 2018 and 2021. During this period, he led them to victory in the Scottish title during the 2020-21 season.

However, after leaving Rangers, Gerrard had unsuccessful stints with Aston Villa and Saudi club Al-Ettifaq which may have influenced his decision not to return at this time.

Timing matters

One of the key reasons for turning down a potential return was timing. With his family still based in Bahrain, it seems that personal considerations played a significant part in his decision-making process. When asked about these factors affecting his decision not to return just yet, Gerrard reiterated that "the timing wasn't right from a family point of view". He also added that one must do their due diligence when considering such opportunities.

Steven Gerrard, Rangers legend, said:

"I had some really positive and interesting talks with the owners. But it felt a bit rushed. I had a lot to think about and a short space of time to give a decision. There were a few things I was uncertain about. And if I'm going to take a challenge that big and that important - I've got that affection and connection with Rangers - for me to take that on again it had to be perfect and I had to be 100% ready."

"I have to analyse, is it right for me?. Is the timing right and are things perfect for me to be the best version of myself in that job? Unfortunately the timing, it didn't feel right to me. I've got that much respect for Rangers that I wouldn't go in there if I was 80-90% ready, but hopefully one day I'll be more ready and more prepared for it and that chance might come again."

The structure now in place at Rangers also appears to have been a factor for Gerrard who has previously held managerial roles rather than head coach positions. Under sporting director Kevin Thelwell and chief executive Patrick Stewart at Rangers, there were suggestions that he would be more of a head coach than a manager. While Gerrard's return to Ibrox is currently off the table, it's clear that his heart remains with the club. Whether or not we'll see him back in a managerial role in future remains to be seen. For now, sports fans and betting enthusiasts alike will continue to watch this space closely.
