Broadcasting behemoth Sky Italia has successfully renewed its broadcast rights deal with European football governing body UEFA to continue providing coverage of its three club competitions to fans in Italy.
The new deal signed between the two will see the network continue to hold rights to the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League for three additional seasons.
The current agreement expires at the end of next season, and gives Sky Italia the right to broadcast 121 of 137 Champions League games per season, as well as all Europa League and Europa Conference League clashes.
Starting next season (2024-25) and for a total of three seasons, Sky will now have the rights to 185 of 203 Champions League games per season, and all 342 Europa League and Europa Conference League matches.
These numbers are higher than previously because they coincide with the new version of the Champions League, which begins with the 2024-25 campaign and will see an additional 4 clubs join the competition and many more games take place between qualified teams.
On top of that, Sky Italia will also air all three finals, as well as the UEFA Super Cup and a proposed new UEFA Europa Super Cup, which has yet to be clearly defined.
Sky Italia Chief Executive, Andrea Duilio, remarked of the deal:
“With the renewal of the Uefa Champions League, Uefa Europa League and Uefa Europa Conference League, our ‘Casa dello Sport’ will host many seasons of exclusive live events.”
Under the new deal, Amazon Prime Video will continue to hold limited rights to these UEFA competitions, as it does under the existing deal, showing a small number of matches during each campaign.
However, Sky Italia will remain the primary destination for Italian football fans looking to watch the very best in elite European club football.
This is a real coup for Sky as interest in continental club football is on the rise in Italy, due to the improved performances of its clubs in Europe. This season will see an Italian finalist in the UEFA Champions League for the first time since Juventus lost to Real Madrid in 2017, could very well boast an all-Italian UEFA Europa League final, and could feature an Italian UEFA Europa Conference League finalist.
Either Inter or AC Milan will be in the Champions League final, both Juventus and Roma could make the Europa League final, with their ties hanging in the balance, and Fiorentina will be favoured to overcome Basel to reach the Conference League final.
It's a good time to be an exclusive UEFA club competition rights holder in Italy, and Sky Italia will see this renewal as a real cause for celebration.
