Following the dismissal of Igor Tudor, Spurs appointed Roberto de Zerbi as they teetered on the brink of relegation in 17th place in league

Roberto de Zerbi, the newly appointed Tottenham Hotspur manager, has issued an apology to fans over his previous comments concerning Mason Greenwood. The Italian's appointment has been met with opposition from some fan groups due to remarks he made about the former Manchester United player, whom he signed and managed during his tenure at Marseille.

Greenwood was embroiled in a legal battle in 2022 when he faced charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. However, these charges were later dropped. In response to the backlash from fans regarding his comments on Greenwood's case, De Zerbi took to the Spurs website to clarify his position. He stated: "I have never wanted to downplay the issue of violence against women or violence against anyone more broadly." The 46-year-old coach further added that he had always "stood up for those" who needed protection.

Roberto de Zerbi, Tottenham manager, said:

"I've consistently fought and taken a stand to be on the side of those who are most at risk. Those of you who know me well, will know that I'm not the kind of person who makes compromises to win more games or win an extra title.

"I'm sorry if I offended anyone's feelings with this subject matter. I have a daughter and I'm very sensitive to these things and I always have been. I hope that over time people will get to know me better and understand that at that moment, I didn't mean to take a stance."

This statement is seen as an attempt by De Zerbi not only to clear any misconceptions about his stance on such serious issues but also as a way of connecting with Spurs' fans who were upset by his earlier remarks.

New era begins under De Zerbi

Tottenham Hotspur turned their attention towards Roberto de Zerbi after interim head coach Igor Tudor was dismissed last Sunday. This decision came when the club found itself languishing at 17th place in the Premier League standings - just one point above and one place away from falling into the relegation zone.

Dealing with controversy right off-the-bat isn't an ideal start for any new manager; however, it provides an opportunity for De Zerbi not only to prove himself as a coach but also to show his character and leadership. His apology and clarification of his stance on violence against women is a step in the right direction. As De Zerbi takes over the reins at Tottenham, fans will be hoping for an upturn in fortunes on the pitch. The Italian's experience and tactical acumen could prove vital in steering Spurs away from their current precarious position.

While it remains to be seen how this controversy impacts De Zerbi's tenure at Tottenham, one thing is clear - he has taken responsibility for his comments and shown remorse. This incident serves as a reminder that sports figures, like everyone else, must always be mindful of their words and actions - especially when they have such a significant influence over fans worldwide.
