Sky, the pay-TV giant, has once again secured the broadcast rights for Baller League UK. This marks the third consecutive year of Sky's coverage of this digital-focused six-a-side soccer concept.
The renewed agreement will see Sky broadcasting every weekly game from the Baller League UK regional competition live on its range of linear networks and NowTV OTT platform. The season kicked off on March 16 and will run through May 25, culminating in a season-ending finals match on June 7.
Baller League games are staged weekly at London’s Copper Box Arena. Each event features six 30-minute matches managed by various former soccer stars and media personalities. Notable teams include Deportrio (managed by Micah Richards and Daniel Sturridge), Prime FC (KSI), Wembley Rangers FC (Ian Wright and Alan Shearer), N5 FC (Jens Lehmann), and Rukkas FC (Idris Elba).
Expanding demographics with pay-TV coverage
While free streaming is available via video platform Twitch, partnering with a pay-TV service like Sky allows Baller League to reach an older demographic than typically found on Twitch. This also enhances the product's legitimacy by placing it alongside top-tier professional soccer properties. Sky Sports already boasts an impressive portfolio of UK soccer rights including Premier League, lower-tier EFL competitions, Scotland’s Premiership, English women’s soccer’s WSL as well as international rights to Germany's elite Bundesliga.
This is the third season since Baller League launched in the UK after being established in Germany. In November last year, they agreed to a wide-ranging two-year partnership with sportswear giant Nike who will serve as their official apparel and equipment provider across its UK competition and the upcoming US regional tournament.
In August, Baller League secured a partnership with sports marketing and media agency Team Marketing to support their sales efforts. Sky's continued partnership with Baller League UK is a testament to the growing popularity of this digital-focused soccer concept. With strategic partnerships and expansion plans in place, Baller League is set to continue its upward trajectory in the world of sports entertainment.
