Riyad Mahrez, one of the most elegant players to have ever graced the Premier League, has suggested that Manchester City may have found a player who mirrors his style of play. The former Leicester City and Manchester City winger had the exceptional technique and effortless ability to outmaneuver defenders made him a standout player in his position.
Mahrez's sublime first touch, keen eye for a pass, and overall brilliance on the field were instrumental in Leicester’s historic Premier League triumph in 2016. His subsequent performances at Etihad Stadium during the 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 seasons further solidified his reputation as an outstanding wide player.
Despite the presence of exceptional right-wingers like Mohamed Salah and Bukayo Saka in English top-flight football, there is still a noticeable absence of players with Mahrez's unique style. Gary Lineker once claimed that aside from legends like Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona, Mahrez’s first touch was unparalleled.
The search for a replacement
Jeremy Doku was signed last year as an apparent replacement for Mahrez but has yet to make significant strides as a right-winger. However, it seems that Manchester City may have found another potential successor in Savinho. The young Brazilian made his debut for Man City during their recent 2-0 victory against Chelsea where he delivered an impressive performance that caught many eyes - including Riyad Mahrez himself.
Reacting to a clip posted by Manchester City’s X account from their victory in the Chelsea match, Mahrez hinted at similarities between Savinho's playing style and his own. He wrote: “Wait a minute”, followed by detective emojis suggesting that he sees himself reflected in Savinho’s game-play.
Savinho had previously admitted considering Riyad Mahre as his “inspiration” and even chose the number 26, which was worn by Mahrez during his time at City. This acknowledgement from his idol that their playing styles are similar would undoubtedly be a dream come true for the young player.
A new era begins
Being likened to Mahrez is high praise for any winger. Savinho, who seems to model his game around the five-time Premier League champion, shares a similarly elegant playing style and willingness to take on defenders with skills and tricks on the pitch.
As Manchester City fans eagerly watch Savinho's progress, they will no doubt be hoping that he can fill the void left by Riyad Mahrez and continue the legacy of stylish play that has become synonymous with their club.
