Nottingham Forest's global head of football, Edu, has been asked to stay away from the club's training ground due to increasing uncertainty over his future. This comes in light of the club's poor performance this season, which has led to significant internal scrutiny of Edu’s role at the City Ground.
Currently sitting 17th in the Premier League table and level on points with West Ham, Nottingham Forest is only out of the relegation zone by goal difference. The team’s lackluster performance this season has raised questions about its leadership and management.
Edu, 47, was noticeably absent from Forest’s three most recent games against Fenerbahce, Brighton and Manchester City. While the club declined to comment on his absence, sources close to Forest insist that Edu continues his work as usual.
Managerial instability
The instability at Nottingham Forest extends beyond its executive ranks. The players have worked under four different managers this season alone - a situation that could be contributing to their poor performance on field.
Nuno Espirito Santo started off as manager but was sacked largely due to a breakdown in relations with Edu. His successors Ange Postecoglou and Sean Dyche suffered similar fates. Vitor Pereira is currently tasked with guiding Forest towards top-flight survival but hasn't managed a Premier League win since his appointment last month.
Despite their struggles on field, Nottingham forest have spent nearly £200m on new players since summer – a strategy that falls under Edu’s remit given his position as global head of football. However given their current league position there are understood misgivings internally regarding Edu's performance particularly around player recruitment decisions.
Uncertain future
Recent reports suggest that it is likely for Edu to leave City Ground before next season begins; however these claims were refuted by the club. Despite this, Edu's role remains under major scrutiny as the season enters its final weeks.
Nottingham Forest's current predicament is a complex issue involving both on-field performance and off-field management. As the season draws to a close, it will be interesting to see how these issues are addressed and what changes are made in an attempt to improve their standing next season.
