The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the association of public-service broadcasters in Europe, has secured rights to broadcast the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup across several major European markets. This move ensures free-to-air coverage of the tournament in numerous territories, including Spain, Sweden, Denmark and more.
The deal was conducted on behalf of 19 EBU members and will ensure that fans across Czechia, Hungary, the Netherlands, Norway, Malta, Belgium (listed twice), Spain, Slovakia, Iceland, Sweden, Ukraine Denmark Poland and Finland can enjoy free-to-air coverage of the Women’s World Cup.
This means that at least one game per day will be covered on EBU members' channels across all these territories. The list includes some traditional heavyweight women's soccer nations like Spain. Additionally highlights from each match day will be distributed via the Eurovision News platform.
First South American host
The next edition of WWC is set to take place in Brazil between June 24 and July 27 next year. This marks a historic moment as it is the first time South America will host this prestigious tournament.
EBU has been partnering with soccer's governing body FIFA since 2015 to secure broadcasting rights for WWC tournaments. The partnership continued through subsequent editions held in France (2019) and Australia & New Zealand (2023).
In addition to securing rights for women’s football events; EBU also holds broadcasting rights for men's World Cup tournaments scheduled for both 2026 and 2030 editions across various European markets.
Recent activities by EBU
In recent developments within EBU activities; an expanded partnership was established with Aquatics GB governing body in late March this year. This agreement aims at increasing availability of a range of events free-to-air in the UK throughout the year. These include swimming, diving, artistic swimming and open water swimming. All these events will be streamed via Eurovision Sport streaming service embedded within the Aquatics GB website.
In terms of global reach for Women's World Cup coverage; a rights deal was unveiled with state broadcaster Mediacorp in Singapore in early February this year.
As we speak, the European qualifying campaign for WWC is currently underway and will continue until December. This promises to be an exciting time for sports fans and sports betting enthusiasts alike as they look forward to enjoying comprehensive coverage of these thrilling sporting events.
