Earlier, Mexico, as a co-host of this year's World Cup, had expressed readiness to host Iran's fixtures if needed

FIFA, the international governing body for football, has rejected a request from Iran to relocate its World Cup matches from the United States to Mexico. The decision comes despite repeated requests and amid an ongoing war between the US and Israel.

Iran’s Football Federation (FFIRI) had asked FIFA last month to move its games out of the US due to escalating tensions in the region. However, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that FIFA denied this request citing logistical impediments.

Sheinbaum reiterated on Friday that all World Cup fixtures will proceed as scheduled in the United States, dismissing any possibility of Mexico hosting Iranian team's games.

Mexican President, Claudia Sheinbaum, said:

“FIFA ultimately decided that the matches cannot be moved from their original venues,”

“It [relocation] would make logistics too complicated, and this decision was taken by FIFA,”

FIFA did not respond directly when asked for comment on confirmation of host venues for Iran’s games.

US-Israel-Iran conflict

The rejection comes against a backdrop of heightened conflict in the Middle East. On February 28th, a war was launched by the US and Israel against Iran which resulted in significant casualties including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and 168 people at a girls school on just day one. In retaliation, Tehran struck Israeli and US military bases across Middle East with missiles and drones. A ceasefire mediated by Pakistan brought these attacks to halt within Iranian borders but Israel continued its offensive into parts of Lebanon.

Despite these geopolitical challenges, Iran was among one of first countries from Asian confederation to qualify for upcoming World Cup tournament. Their qualification is testament to their resilience amidst adversity both on field and off it. Mexico had shown willingness earlier as co-hosts along with Canada & USA for this year's world cup event - they were open towards hosting Iranian team’s fixtures if required but recent comments by Sheinbaum have reaffirmed stance taken by FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Infantino had met with Iranian football players, coaches and officials in Turkiye on March 31st, reinforcing FIFA's commitment to keeping the games in the United States as planned. While Iran’s request for relocation of its World Cup matches has been denied by FIFA, it remains to be seen how this decision will impact the team's performance amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions. Regardless of where they play their games, Iran's journey to World Cup is a testament to their resilience and passion for football.
