Recent loss to Crystal Palace has sparked concerns about their defense, particularly the inconsistent performance of Konate

Liverpool’s recent 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park has raised concerns about their defensive performance, particularly that of Ibrahima Konate. The unexpected loss, following a promising start to the season, has led former defender Micah Richards to voice his worries about Konate's inconsistent form.

The Premier League champions' first loss of the season came as a shock after an impressive five-match unbeaten run. The game was marked by a late Eddie Nketiah strike from a long throw which left many questioning Liverpool’s defensive capabilities.

The opening half saw Crystal Palace take control early on, capitalising on sloppy set-piece defending and leaving Liverpool struggling to match their intensity. Despite Federico Chiesa levelling the scores after halftime with a well-taken finish, Nketiah struck again late in the match sealing Palace’s win.

Spotlight on Ibrahima Konate

Much of the post-match scrutiny fell upon French defender Ibrahima Konate who had previously been seen as a reliable partner for Virgil van Dijk. His performance against Crystal Palace was notably lacklustre and drew criticism from Micah Richards during his commentary on Match of the Day.

Micah Richards, BBC Pundit, said:

“Konate is starting to worry me a little bit. Him and Van Dijk have been a good partnership, but his individual errors at this moment in time are just making the backline look a bit nervy. You know Liverpool always look good in defence, Van Dijk always marshals the backline, but they give Palace too many opportunities for no actual reason, it was just being sloppy, and that is so unlike Liverpool.”

Konate's struggles were reminiscent of earlier displays this season where lapses in positioning and timing exposed weaknesses in Liverpool’s backline. This inconsistency is concerning given his previous commanding performances against Arsenal and Burnley where he played decisive roles.

Impact on team stability

Konate’s fluctuating form is starting to undermine Liverpool’s defensive stability - an issue made more urgent due to Giovanni Leoni being sidelined through injury and Joe Gomez being the only senior centre-back available as backup.

At his best, Konate offers pace, power and composure but moments of slackness have started creeping in at crucial times. This has placed additional pressure on Alisson and Van Dijk, potentially threatening Liverpool’s defensive record under Arne Slot.

Liverpool may need to expedite plans for defensive reinforcements, especially if injuries continue to plague the team. Slot has emphasised the importance of building partnerships over time and maintaining consistency in selection - factors that could help Konate regain his rhythm and confidence.
