Liverpool has confirmed that the much-anticipated match between them and Manchester United is set to proceed as scheduled, despite concerns over heavy snowfall in the north west area. This announcement comes after a second safety meeting was held to assess the weather and travel conditions.
There were initial fears that the game might be postponed due to overnight weather conditions. An amber warning had been put in place by the Met Office from 6pm on Saturday evening through midday on Sunday, sparking worries about potential disruptions.
However, Liverpool released a statement at 9:31 AM on X (formerly known as Twitter), stating that "a safety meeting was held this morning to assess the weather and travel conditions" ahead of their game against United. The club added that another meeting would take place at 12pm to confirm whether or not what is often considered as one of football's most-watched fixtures would go ahead.
Game On!
In a follow-up statement, Liverpool confirmed that despite initial concerns, the game is indeed set to go ahead as planned. This news will undoubtedly come as a relief for both teams' fans who have been eagerly awaiting this clash.
Liverpool released statement:
"Today’s fixture against Manchester United will go ahead as planned. Two safety meetings were held earlier to assess the weather and travel conditions. We thank everyone involved in helping us to get this game on today. If you’re travelling to Anfield then please take extra care. We look forward to seeing you there."
For Manchester United, this match comes at a critical time when they are looking forward to ending their run of four straight defeats across all competitions under Ruben Amorim's leadership. Their last victory came against Manchester City on December 15th but since then they have suffered losses against Tottenham, Bournemouth, Wolves and Newcastle. This losing streak has seen them drop down to 14th position in Premier League table with just 22 points from their first 19 matches - only seven points above relegation zone.
On contrastingly high spirits are Liverpool who are currently leading in Premier League standings. If they manage a win against United under Arne Slot's guidance, they would extend their lead over second-place Arsenal to eight points with a game in hand. The Reds have lost just one game in 18 top-flight matches this season, which was against Nottingham Forest back in September.
