England defender, Kyle Walker, has announced his retirement from international football. The 35-year-old Burnley full-back has decided to hang up his boots after a successful career representing the Three Lions on the global stage.
Walker's journey with England began in November 2011 when he made his debut against Spain. Over time, he established himself as a regular for the national team and went on to win an impressive total of 96 caps. His tenure saw him feature at five major tournaments, including two World Cups and three European Championships.
The last of these caps was won in a friendly match against Senegal at City Ground in June 2025. Reflecting on his career, Walker described it as a "whirlwind of a journey" but acknowledged that this chapter is now closed.
Kyle Walker, Burnley player, said:
"I am sad to be making this decision, but I'm also very proud of what I've achieved with England,"
"Today is the time that comes to an end. It's good for me to have a little bit of closure to my career on the international stage."
Key contributions and achievements
During his time with England, Walker played under Sir Gareth Southgate's leadership and was instrumental in helping them reach successive European Championship finals in 2021 and 2024. He also represented England at the World Cups held in 2018 and 2022.
Walker's performances were recognised by Uefa who selected him for their teams of both tournaments at the Euros. Additionally, he served as vice-captain for the Three Lions during their latter campaign.
Despite these achievements though, current England manager Thomas Tuchel did not include him in his most recent squad selection - an indication that perhaps it was time for Walker to step aside from international duties.
Legacy left behind
Reflecting on his decision to retire from international football, Walker expressed immense pride over winning so many caps for England - something he considers a "great honour". He hopes that through his contributions over the years he has helped shape positive perceptions about how England’s national side performs on field.
Kyle Walker's retirement marks the end of an era for England's defence. His contributions to the national team have been significant, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of footballers. As he steps away from international duties, fans and fellow players alike will remember him as a stalwart defender who consistently delivered for his country.
