Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has expressed his concerns over the team's poor performance in the Premier League, attributing it to a lack of physicality and height. The champions have suffered four consecutive league defeats, with their latest 3-2 loss against Brentford marking a new low.
Arne Slot, who has been critical of his side for conceding from set pieces, shares Carragher’s sentiments. The former Reds star argues that the club is in crisis and fears that questions may soon be asked about Slot’s managerial position due to his inability to extract more from the summer signings.
Jamie Carragher, Liverpool legend, said:
"Losing four games in a row for Brentford would be a disaster. To see the champions do it with the expenditure in the summer means we're in crisis time. There will be a lot of serious questions asked in the dressing room between the players and the coaching staff and the people above the manager. When they've looked at what they've spent, they'll be looking for a lot more.
"Liverpool have to look at the physicality and height within their team because, right now, I don't think they have enough."
The Merseysiders spent over £400m on new signings but currently sit seventh with 15 points after nine matchweeks. They are already trailing seven points behind first-placed Arsenal.
Comparisons with Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal
Slot had previously praised Paris Saint-Germain's playstyle last season, particularly their use of full-backs and midfielders. His recruitment of Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong suggested an attempt to emulate PSG’s style. However, critics argue that this approach overlooks the physical nature of the Premier League.
Unlike Ligue 1 where PSG competes without facing much physicality, Liverpool often faces teams targeting their flanks in the physically demanding Premier League matches.
In contrast to Slot’s approach stands Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta who prioritizes adding aggressive and combative players to his squad - a strategy which seems more effective given Arsenal’s current standing at first place.
