Hull City, a prominent football club, has been charged by the Football Association (FA) over discriminatory chanting during their FA Cup defeat against Chelsea in February. The incident occurred at the MKM Stadium and was severe enough to warrant warnings over the PA system.
During the first half of the match, spectators were warned via the PA system to cease discriminatory chanting. Despite this warning, which also mentioned that CCTV inside the ground was being monitored, some fans continued with their offensive behavior. This led to Hull City's charge by FA for failing to control its spectators and supporters.
The FA alleged that Hull City "failed to ensure its spectators and/or supporters (and anyone purporting to be supporters) do not use words or behave in an improper, offensive, abusive, indecent or insulting way with a reference - whether express or implied - to sexual orientation".
Consequences for Hull City
As a result of these allegations and charges from FA, Hull City now faces potential penalties. The club has until Tuesday 2nd June to respond officially. This comes as a blow for Hull who recently celebrated promotion into Premier League on Saturday. In connection with this incident during the tie against Chelsea four men were arrested on suspicion of offensive chanting. Chelsea Pride is an official LGBTQ+ supporter group associated with Chelsea FC. In response to this incident they released a statement after the match expressing their disappointment at such behavior still being prevalent in football culture today.
Chelsea Pride, the club's official LGBTQ+ supporter group, said:
"Tonight, homophobic chanting was once again directed at our supporters. This is utterly unacceptable.
"We acknowledge that Hull City made stadium announcements, confirmed CCTV was being monitored and that arrests have been made. Action matters. Accountability matters. Consequences matter. But let us be clear, the fact that this chant is still being heard in 2026 is a stain on our game."
