Maguire was handed a suspended sentence of 21 months and 10 days in prison in 2020, which has now been reduced to 15 months

Manchester United defender, Harry Maguire, has been handed a reduced 15-month suspended sentence by a Greek court. This verdict follows an incident that occurred on the island of Mykonos in August 2020. The case has seen numerous twists and turns over the years, with appeals and retrials marking its progress.

Maguire was initially given a suspended sentence of 21 months and 10 days in prison in 2020. The England international was found guilty of repeated bodily harm, attempted bribery, violence against public employees, and insult.

However, this initial verdict did not mark the end of the legal proceedings. The following day after his conviction, Maguire's legal team lodged an appeal against it. According to Greek law, this appeal nullified his conviction leading to a full retrial.

Retrial proceedings

The retrial process was not smooth sailing; it faced postponement on four occasions between 2023 and 2025 before finally restarting in Syros on Wednesday. The conclusion drawn from the retrial differed significantly from the initial verdict. It found Maguire guilty of non-serious assault, resisting arrest and attempted bribery - charges less severe than those he had initially been convicted for. In light of these reduced charges against him, Maguire's sentence was subsequently reduced to a suspended term of just 15 months.

Despite this reduction in his sentence severity level , sources have informed BBC Sport that Maguire denies any wrongdoing still plans to take further legal action by appealing to the Supreme Court. Interestingly enough ,Maguire has turned down several opportunities for out-of-court settlements as he remains determined to clear his name legally through court proceedings rather than private negotiations or settlements.

Despite these ongoing legal issues ,the Manchester United defender continues with his football career. The 32-year-old is included in the Manchester United squad for Wednesday's Premier League game at Newcastle United (20:15 GMT). This comes despite him having to leave the field during a win against Crystal Palace on Sunday due to illness.

While Maguire's legal troubles have seen a reduction in severity, they are far from over. His determination to clear his name legally and continue with his football career amidst these challenges demonstrates his resilience and commitment both on and off the pitch.
