Palmer looked out of touch in Chelsea’s 3-1 defeat against Manchester City

Former Manchester United player and current football pundit, Gary Neville, has expressed his disapproval over Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer's post-match conversation with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola. This interaction occurred following Chelsea's 3-1 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday night.

Chelsea initially took the lead at the Etihad Stadium when Nicolas Jackson capitalized on a blunder from City’s new £33.6 million signing Abdukodir Khusanov. This allowed Noni Madueke to score from close range. However, Josko Gvardiol equalized for City before half time and the Premier League champions took control after the break. Erling Haaland seized upon another error from Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to put Man City ahead.

Phil Foden then sealed victory for Man City by scoring late in the game. The win places them fourth in the Premier League table while Chelsea lags a point behind in sixth place.

Palmer-Guardiola interaction

Palmer, who had a quiet game against his former club, was seen sharing smiles and having an extended chat with Guardiola on the pitch after full-time whistle blew. Neville did not mince words while criticizing this interaction between Palmer and Guardiola. He suggested that Palmer was being manipulated during this exchange - an assertion that has sparked considerable debate among fans of both teams.

Gary Neville, Manchester United legend, said:

‘I want to say something about Cole Palmer, he was talking to Pep Guardiola on the pitch right at the end of the game and he was smiling with him, Pep Guardiola does that, Cole, you’re being played, you’re being played here, you didn’t do enough out on that pitch in the second half. He’s an amazing player, absolutely brilliant, but you know something, those Chelsea fans that travelled today, the 3,000 or 4,000 in that far corner wanted better than that, they don’t really want to see you conversing with your opposition manager and smiling at the end of the game.

‘I’m not being old school here, but there’s something about that. I thought Pep Guardiola’s playing you here, I know he’s had him, but he didn’t play him here and he sold him. Having a conversation inside I’m not against that, obviously he’s played for the manager. But I just felt at the end there’s something about it I didn’t feel was right from a Cole Palmer perspective.

‘I know why Pep Guardiola’s done it, that’s what Pep Guardiola does, but if I’d lost 3-1 away from home and had been as disappointed as I am and Cole Palmer, I expected more from him in the second half.’

The incident serves as a reminder of how closely scrutinized players' actions are both on and off the pitch. It also underscores the importance of maintaining a professional demeanor, particularly in the aftermath of a defeat. While Neville's comments may be seen as harsh by some, they reflect a broader conversation about player conduct and sportsmanship in football. As such, this incident will likely continue to fuel discussions among sports fans and pundits alike for some time to come.
