Newcastle United manager, Eddie Howe, has recently dismissed reports suggesting that Manchester United is in advanced talks to sign his captain, Bruno Guimarães. The rumors have been circulating amidst claims that the Red Devils are keen on signing the Brazilian international as a replacement for Casemiro.
Casemiro is set to leave Old Trafford when his contract expires at the end of this season. He has personally recommended his fellow countryman, Guimarães, as a suitable long-term replacement. A report from Reuters suggested that an €80million (£69m) deal was under discussion with Newcastle. Real Madrid was also reportedly considering a move for the 28-year-old midfielder.
Since his arrival from Lyon in 2022, Bruno Guimarães has been instrumental in Newcastle's performance. The team has won just two of their 16 matches without him over the last four years. However, he has been sidelined due to a hamstring injury since February and hopes to return after the international break in April. The recent report came after a disappointing night for Newcastle when they crashed out of the Champions League following a second-half capitulation against Barcelona.
Upcoming challenges and manager’s response
As Newcastle gears up for one of their biggest games of this season - Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland on Sunday - speculations about Guimarães’ future continue to swirl around.
When asked about these reports regarding Guimarães’ future at Tyneside club, Howe responded: ‘I don’t even know how to respond to that. It is a waste of my energy.’ He further labeled such speculation as ‘totally disrespectful’, reiterating there is nothing to the ‘nonsense’ story.
Newcastle United manager, Eddie Howe, said:
‘I don’t even know how to respond to that. It is a waste of my energy. Bruno is our captain and he is fully committed at the moment. He is injured at the moment; his only focus is coming back to fitness. Is it a problem for us? I don’t necessarily think it is a problem for us, but it is unwanted news, I suppose, is the best way to put it. You don’t want the players distracted, but I don’t know how much they will absorb that.
‘For me, it is not the time to think about it. In the summer, you can understand those stories a little bit more because the transfer window is open. To say our captain is in discussions with another club is totally disrespectful to Bruno more than anything else, he is totally committed here. I’m not going to be impolite because I don’t think it’s the forum to do that in. For me, it’s a nonsense story.’
While the departure of Casemiro from Manchester United has sparked rumors about potential replacements, Newcastle's manager Eddie Howe has firmly dismissed any talks of Bruno Guimarães leaving Tyneside. As sports fans and sports betting enthusiasts continue to speculate on player transfers, it is clear that for now, Bruno Guimarães remains a key part of Newcastle United's plans.
