The match at Elland Road, which started at 17:30 GMT, was briefly halted in the 13th minute to allow players observing Ramadan to hydrate

In a recent Premier League game between Leeds United and Manchester City, an unfortunate incident occurred that has sparked controversy. The match was briefly paused to allow players observing Ramadan to break their fast, a move that was met with loud boos from some sections of the crowd.

The game kicked off at 17:30 GMT at Elland Road and was paused in the 13th minute. Both sets of players came to the side of the pitch to take on fluids as part of their observance of Ramadan. A message displayed on the big screen inside the stadium read: "As tonight's match takes place inside the holy month of Ramadan, play has been paused briefly to allow players to break their fast."

Manchester City had three Muslim players - Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Omar Marmoush - in their starting line-up, with Abdukodir Khusanov waiting on the bench.

Reaction from Leeds United Management

BBC Sport reached out to Leeds United for comment regarding this incident. When asked about it during an interview with Sky Sports, Leeds assistant manager Edmund Riemer said he didn't really hear it due to his focus on the game but expressed disappointment over some supporters' behavior. During a post-match media conference, Riemer added that they would try "to learn out of it" and emphasized they "need to do better next time". Despite this unfortunate incident overshadowing parts of it, Manchester City went on to win 1-0 through Antoine Semenyo's goal in first-half stoppage time.

Ramadan is a holy month observed by Muslims worldwide where they abstain from food and drink from dawn until sunset. It began this year on February 17th and lasts for one month. In the UK, sunset ranges from about 17:00 to 19:00 during this period. Therefore, the only games that could feature a break in play are Saturday's 17:30 kick-off and Sunday's 16:30 kick-off.

This incident at Elland Road serves as a reminder of the importance of respect and understanding in sports. It is crucial for fans to remember that football is a global game with players from diverse backgrounds and beliefs. The actions of a few should not overshadow the spirit of unity and camaraderie that sport promotes.
