The French pay-TV network has renewed its deal with the Spanish top flight in the region

La Liga has announced the renewal of its TV rights deal with Canal+ in Sub-Saharan Africa, Madagascar and Mauritius. The French broadcasting giant will retain the rights to the Spanish top flight for the upcoming 2022/23 season.

As the new La Liga season kicks off on August 12, Canal+ has vowed to provide coverage of selected matches from the league during each gameweek of the season.

The new deal also includes coverage of the Spanish second division, the La Liga Smart Bank.

On top of that, Canal+ will produce and air "revista" programs featuring highlights and analysis of matches from La Liga and the Segunda every week.

In a statement, Canal+ said it is “positioned more than ever as the only sports broadcaster in Sub-Saharan Africa to offer to its subscribers all the major European football leagues,”

The French speaking network holds the rights to La Liga, as well as Ligue 1, the Bundesliga, Serie A and the Premier League, meaning it provides coverage of all five major European football leagues to its customers in the region.

The popularity of the Spanish top flight in Africa is expected to increase this season, in the wake of Real Madrid's signing of Cameroon international Aurelien Tchouameni and Ivorian star Franck Kessie's move to Barcelona.

However, the latter may end up leaving the Catalan giants if they are unable to register him in the league in the coming weeks.

This agreement is the latest signed by Canal+ in recent weeks, having announced a sublicensing deal for the English Premier League with Slovak Telekom, to bring EPL football to Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

Broadcasters around the world continue to jockey for position as rights deals are sold left and right in the early days of a fledgling 2022/23 football season.
