The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has announced its comprehensive plans for the upcoming World Cup matches, which includes broadcasting the first ten minutes of select fixtures on YouTube and TikTok. This innovative approach is set to revolutionize how sports fans engage with football.

In a groundbreaking move, all home nations fixtures and a selection of the tournament’s biggest clashes will be available live across BBC Football’s YouTube and TikTok channels. This opportunity was made possible after FIFA formed partnerships with these social media giants earlier this year.

Alex Kay-Jelski, BBC director of sport, said:

“The BBC is turning the biggest World Cup in history into the most iconic one yet. We’re bringing fans closer to every match, every moment and every story than ever before. Sport truly unites people like nothing else so we can’t wait for fans to enjoy not just the live matches with us but an abundance of football content, all day, every day across our platforms. Whether it’s our new series on YouTube and iPlayer, the biggest news stories on our website and app, our daily podcasts on Sounds or the viral moments on social media – we’re here for audiences 24/7 this summer, taking them straight to heart of the World Cup.”

The 54 matches that the BBC will broadcast include England's group stage meeting with Ghana, England's knockout games in various rounds if they progress, Scotland's opener and final group match against Haiti and Brazil respectively. These matches will be available in Ultra High Definition (UHD) on linear TV and iPlayer. ITV will cover the remaining games.

Star-studded presentation team

Leading figures such as Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman, Gabby Logan, Alex Scott among others are set to lead presentations from an immersive studio created with dock10 in Salford. Punditry will be provided by renowned personalities including Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney, Micah Richards etc., while commentary duties fall upon Guy Mowbray, Steve Wilson among others.

In addition to live streaming on YouTube and TikTok, the BBC is also expanding its digital presence in several exciting ways. The BBC Sport website and app are set to launch an interactive 3D experience that will allow users to explore key moments of the games from every angle. Furthermore, a new BBC Football YouTube channel is being introduced which will feature digital-first shows such as SV2 vs The World and Game Changers. Podcast enthusiasts aren't left out either; there will be extensive podcast coverage across platforms like BBC Sounds and iPlayer, including special episodes of popular podcasts like The Wayne Rooney Show. These initiatives aim at providing fans an immersive experience into the world cup journey.

The BBC Sport website and app will also host interactive games, first-person fan storytelling from matches across the globe, and a new Shorts experience of vertical video. Users can choose between Shorts and the traditional BBC Sport homepage for their landing page on the BBC Sport app. In addition to live coverage, documentaries like England 2006: The Golden Generation, Rivals: Messi v Ronaldo are set to air along with specially commissioned Kevin Bridges: In Search of the Beautiful Game. BBC's innovative approach towards World Cup coverage is set to redefine how sports fans engage with football. By leveraging social media platforms for live streaming, launching digital-first shows on YouTube channel & providing extensive podcast coverage across platforms; they aim at providing an immersive experience into the world cup journey. This move not only caters to traditional sports fans but also appeals to a younger audience who consume content digitally.
