The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has successfully secured rights to broadcast highlights from Spain's top-tier football league, LaLiga, until 2027. This move is part of LaLiga's ongoing efforts to increase its visibility in the UK.
The BBC plans to use these rights across its various platforms. The clips and videos will be published on the BBC Sport website and app, as well as on its social media channels. This expansion of coverage is expected to bring Spanish football closer to UK fans.
LaLiga has been actively seeking ways to enhance its presence in the UK market. Earlier this year, it struck a three-year highlights deal with pay-TV giant Sky that runs through the 2027-28 campaign. The league currently features several high-profile England national team players such as Jude Bellingham, Conor Gallagher, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Marcus Rashford which further increases interest among British fans.
Media rights distribution
Earlier this year, LaLiga announced a reshuffling of its media rights distribution in the UK and Ireland. Over-the-top (OTT) streaming service Disney+ joined incumbent rightsholder Premier Sports for broadcasting matches for upcoming seasons.
Under the terms of this three-year agreement, Disney+ has been granted the rights to exclusively showcase one game per week throughout each season. Meanwhile, Premier Sports will maintain its role as the primary broadcaster for LaLiga in the UK and Ireland. It will continue to air over 340 domestic fixtures per season across both traditional linear TV and OTT platforms.
Disney replaced ITV which had shown a few games each year over previous campaigns. Global sports streaming service DAZN also holds global highlights rights for LaLiga under a two-year agreement covering seasons 2025-26 and 2026-27 signed earlier this August.
Growing portfolio for BBC
This new acquisition adds another feather in BBC's cap, which has been steadily expanding its football portfolio. Earlier this week, the broadcaster retained its highlights rights package for the top-tier UEFA Champions League pan-European competition for the 2027-31 cycle.
Director of BBC Sport, Alex Kay-Jelski, said:
"Following the announcement of our recent deal with the Bundesliga, we're thrilled to now bring La Liga clips to BBC Sport's digital platforms.
"These additions strengthen our already extensive global football offering and allow us to showcase the stories, rivalries and standout talent from across Europe. As we look ahead to World Cup 2026, this puts us in a fantastic position to bring fans closer to the players and moments that matter – all in one place."
Last month, BBC also secured rights to broadcast Friday night matches from Germany’s top-tier Bundesliga through 2027 and agreed a five-year deal to air live matches from UEFA’s Women’s Champions League starting from the 2025-26 season. This growing stable of football rights positions BBC as a key player in bringing international football closer to UK fans and sports betting enthusiasts.
