Final saw more than 10 million people tune in

The much-awaited first season of the Women's Premier League has just concluded, with Mumbai Indians emerging as the inaugural champions. The league has accomplished many feats since its announcement, but their latest accomplishments have been more spectacular than ever.

The final of the Women's Premier League between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals recorded the highest-ever viewing numbers for a women's event anywhere across the globe. Viacom18, who holds the exclusive rights to the league, recently released a statement about the game's historic accomplishment.

Final attracted 10 million viewers and logged a record watch-time of more than 50 minutes per user, breaking records for any women's event in history. The WPL has already established itself with impressive business figures, but recent media numbers indicate that women's cricket is going to have a brighter future in the near future.

In an official release from Viacom18, the company's Sports CEO Anil Jayaraj said:

“Our vision is to nurture the TATA WPL into the biggest women’s sporting league in the world, and this is a big leap in that direction. To see it already on its way to becoming the largest viewed sports event in the world in the first season is a remarkable feat and testament to the potential,”

“We’d like to thank our 50+ advertising partners that met us eye-to-eye on this vision, viewers who pushed us to raise the bar and deliver a world-class viewing experience.”

Jio Cinema have now eyes set on IPL

Viacom18 are also digital rights holder of IPL and are looking to replicate the same magic in the Men's version. They have introduced a new dimension to streaming for fans with a selection of angles and 4K streaming at zero cost.

Moreover, Viacom18 also recently hosted the FIFA World Cup 2022 in India, so they are not new to hosting large events of this size. It is likely that their impressive signs will greatly influence the upcoming media rights deal of BCCI which may see more competition in digital rights rather than television rights in the future.
