The French defender shrugged off any chances of bad blood against Argentine starlet

Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana has publicly addressed the recent racism controversy involving teammate Enzo Fernandez. The incident, which occurred during Chelsea's pre-season tour of the USA, saw Fernandez embroiled in a racism row following an Instagram video.

Fernandez found himself at the center of a storm after posting a video on Instagram that seemed to depict him and his Argentina teammates engaging in a derogatory chant about the France national team during their Copa America celebrations.

The 23-year-old midfielder, who joined Chelsea from Benfica for a British-record transfer fee of £106.8m in February 2023, has since apologized to his teammates upon joining them Stateside. His apology was accepted by his peers, including Fofana who is keen to move past this episode.

Chelsea defender, Wesley Fofana, said:

"Enzo Fernandez said sorry. He did not want to hurt French fans or anyone. He did not understand when singing it, I trust him. Because I know him. I know Enzo. He is not racist. I'm happy to see Enzo back. We play together. We need to stay together. We're strong together.

"If I'm on one side and Enzo is on the other side and we fight every day or we don't talk or we're not happy, then we don't play well! It's all ok now."

Internal disciplinary proceedings concluded

While FIFA continues its investigation into the incident, Chelsea's internal disciplinary process has concluded. Two weeks ago, Chelsea initiated disciplinary proceedings against Fernandez after he posted the controversial video on social media - an act that was condemned by French Football Federation as containing racist content about France's black players.

However, with Fernandez having been proactive in apologizing both publicly and privately - even going so far as to preemptively fund anti-racism and anti-discrimination education through donations - these proceedings are now closed.

Significant contribution towards anti-discrimination efforts

In addition to his apologies and acceptance of responsibility for his actions, Fernandez has pledged to make significant contributions towards an anti-discrimination charity – with Chelsea matching this contribution dollar-for-dollar. Discussions are currently underway regarding where best these funds should be allocated.

Fernandez’s commitment towards anti-racism and anti-discrimination efforts have been further demonstrated through consultations with other key figures within Chelsea such as captain Reece James and French defender Axel Disasi.

Chelsea head coach, Enzo Maresca, said:

"We all feel very comfortable, very good. Enzo is back, he had a chat with all of us to clarify there was no bad intention. The lads, they all accept it.

"Everything was like before, the players were all together, all speaking, all laughing. There is no mystery, we've clarified the situation and there is nothing more to add. We all make mistakes. Enzo has apologised and his team-mates have accepted it."

Support from PFA and Kick It Out

The Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) has reached out to Chelsea, offering its support to players affected by the incident. Meanwhile, anti-discrimination organization Kick It Out referred back to their statement made on July 17 when approached by Sky Sports News for comment.

While the incident has undoubtedly cast a shadow over Chelsea's pre-season tour of the USA, it is clear that steps are being taken towards resolution and education. With Fernandez’s apologies accepted and his commitment towards anti-racism efforts evident, it seems both he and his teammates are eager to move forward from this unfortunate episode.
