Tottenham Hotspur has announced the appointment of their new head coach, Thomas Frank, replacing outgoing Ange Postecoglou. The highly-rated Brentford manager is set to take over the reins from Postecoglou who led Spurs to a historic UEFA Europa League victory but also their lowest ever Premier League finish. Postecoglou's departure was met with mixed feelings among Spurs fans. Despite guiding the team to its first trophy in 17 years, his tenure also saw them slump to an all-time low in the Premier League standings. However, many fans appreciated his embodiment of the club’s motto “Audere est Facere” or “to dare is to do.”
Under previous managers Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, Spurs struggled for success despite their reputations as serial winners. When Postecoglou arrived from Celtic, he brought about a change that had Spurs playing some of their best football at times.
While domestic performance waned from November onwards during his first season, Postecoglou managed to balance attractive football with resolute performances in high-pressure away games leading up to their Europa League triumph. Despite this achievement though, key decision-makers including Daniel Levy decided it was time for a change and relieved Ange of his duties.
Why Thomas Frank?
Thomas Frank comes into this role following an impressive stint at Brentford since Matthew Benham’s takeover in 2012. Under Benham's leadership and Frank's management skills, Brentford transformed from midtable stalwarts in League One into Premier League European contenders - reaching their highest level since just after World War II.
Thomas Frank brings a unique set of strengths to his new role at Tottenham Hotspur. He is renowned for his excellent man-management skills, which have been instrumental in fostering team unity and individual player growth. His tactical flexibility is another key strength, setting him apart from his predecessor Ange Postecoglou who often faced criticism for a perceived lack of adaptability.
Frank's ability to extract the best performance from each of his players has been a defining feature of his managerial style, contributing significantly to the success he has enjoyed so far. Crucially for Spurs, Frank also brings with him valuable Premier League experience - an asset that will undoubtedly be beneficial as he navigates this new chapter in his career. Frank's calm demeanour and ability to handle difficult situations are also seen as assets. His compatibility with Daniel Levy and the Tottenham hierarchy is expected to bring stability to the club.
Brentford Legacy
Frank's tenure at Brentford was marked by a data-driven transfer approach that many have tried, but mostly failed, to replicate. His ability to turn a profit on just about anyone is commendable. However, unearthing Thomas Frank might be considered Benham’s greatest achievement yet.
As Tottenham Hotspur welcomes their new head coach, fans will be hoping that Thomas Frank can bring about a resurgence in their Premier League fortunes while continuing their success in European competitions.
