Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly set their sights on signing Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha in the upcoming summer transfer window. Despite a challenging 2024-25 campaign with the German giants, Palhinha's previous performance in England has caught the attention of these Premier League clubs.
Palhinha made his move to Bayern from Fulham last summer. However, he struggled to replicate his best form for the Bundesliga champions, being limited to just 25 appearances across all competitions.
In contrast, during his tenure at Fulham, the Portugal international shone brightly. He scored eight goals and registered one assist in 79 appearances, earning a reputation as one of England's top-flight defensive midfielders.
Man United and Tottenham eyeing Premier League return for Palhinha
According to reports, both Manchester United and Tottenham are keen on bringing back the 30-year-old midfielder this summer. However, a loan deal seems unlikely at this stage.
Bayern is reportedly asking around €30m (£26m) for Palhinha who still has three years left on his contract with them.
Tottenham have already signed two defenders and two forwards this summer but are looking forward to strengthening their central midfield before the transfer window closes. With Champions League football on offer - thanks to their victory over Man United in last season’s Europa League final - Spurs could be an attractive option for new signings like Palhinha who has proven himself in England’s top flight.
Man United’s transfer strategy & Eriksen’s departure
On another hand, Manchester United have also signed an attacker and a defender this summer while planning further bolstering of their midfield before market closure. The departure of Christian Eriksen on a free transfer has opened up space in midfield. However, signing Palhinha might be against their usual transfer policy of targeting young players over established stars.
While Palhinha is reportedly hesitant to abandon his Bayern career, he may consider a move if it becomes clear that his struggle for playing time will continue into the next season.
With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, regular playtime is crucial for him. Both Man United and Tottenham could offer him Premier League action. Although Man United are believed to lead the English interest, their absence from Europe during the 2025-26 campaign could potentially hinder their chances in this battle for Palhinha’s signature. While both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have shown interest in Joao Palhinha after his difficult campaign with Bayern Munich, it remains to be seen where this talented midfielder will land next season.
