Liverpool Football Club could be facing a reprimand after being spotted repeatedly breaching a Premier League rule during their match against Manchester United. This rule, introduced in 2022, was violated several times by the Merseyside club as they sought to equalize following Harry Maguire's winning goal.
After nine years of disappointment on Merseyside, Manchester United secured a monumental 2-1 victory over Liverpool on Sunday afternoon. The win marked an important milestone for Ruben Amorim’s side. However, the game was not without controversy.
Liverpool fans expressed their frustration at Bryan Mbeumo’s early goal inside two minutes. They argued that play should have been halted due to Alexis Mac Allister’s head injury – ironically caused by his own teammate. Further controversy arose later in the first half when Liverpool's penalty claim was denied after the ball struck Amad Diallo in the box. Despite these contentious moments, it was clear that United were deserved winners.
Breach of Premier League rules
According to reports, Liverpool are set for a “showdown” with the Premier League after breaching their multi-ball rules multiple times during this match.
The multi-ball system is a relatively new addition to Premier League rules; it was introduced back in 2022 and stipulates that footballs should be placed on tees around the pitch for players to grab when needed. Ball boys and girls are not permitted to hand balls directly to players under this system.
However, during their pursuit of an equalizer against Man Utd., Liverpool breached this rule several times - even extending it further as manager Arne Slot was spotted throwing the ball directly to one of his players late into the game.
Potential consequences
While Manchester United did not issue a formal complaint against Liverpool, the rule breaches were noted by the travelling delegation from Old Trafford. The precedent for breaching the multi-ball rule was set in August when Aston Villa were fined £125,000 after admitting to breaking these regulations.
However, it's worth noting that Villa’s breaches occurred over five separate matches. Therefore, Liverpool might escape with just a warning from the Premier League. Nevertheless, Aston Villa also faced additional punishment - they were banned from using the multi-ball system in their first three home matches this season. This could potentially be another consequence headed Liverpool’s way if they are found guilty of these rule breaches.
While fans eagerly await official word on any potential penalties for Liverpool's actions during their match against Manchester United, one thing is clear: adherence to rules and fair play remains paramount in maintaining the integrity of football.
