Netherlands attacking midfielder, Xavi Simons, has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). This injury not only affects Tottenham's fight against relegation but also impacts the Netherlands' campaign in this summer's World Cup.
Simons was carried off on a stretcher during Tottenham's 1-0 victory over Wolves last Saturday. The 23-year-old player fell to the ground following a collision with Wolves defender Hugo Bueno. Despite initially getting back on his feet, he soon went down again.
Tottenham confirmed that Simons will undergo surgery in the coming weeks. ACL injuries typically sideline players for six to nine months as they recover, effectively ending Simon’s participation in both club and international fixtures this season.
Tottenham released statement:
"We can confirm that Xavi Simons has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee. Xavi will undergo surgery in the coming weeks and, following that, will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team."
Impact on Tottenham’s relegation battle
The injury comes at an unfortunate time as Spurs are battling Premier League relegation. Despite their recent win over Wolves, they remain two points from safety with just four games left.
Xavi Simons, Tottenham player, said:
"They say life can be cruel and today it feels that way,"
"My season has come to an abrupt end and I'm just trying to process it. Honestly, I'm heartbroken. None of it makes sense."
Simons joined Tottenham from RB Leipzig last summer for £52m and has made significant contributions this season with 28 league appearances including 19 starts. He scored two goals and registered five assists but struggled to make a major impact during a tumultuous season which saw managerial changes at Spurs.
The loss of Simons adds to an already lengthy injury list heading into their final four Premier League games against Aston Villa, Leeds United, Chelsea and Everton. Striker Dominic Solanke also suffered an injury at Wolves while Ben Davies, Mohammed Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Wilson Odobert and Cristian Romero are all sidelined. Simons' absence will also be felt by his national team as they prepare for the upcoming 2026 World Cup, which begins on 11 June. The Netherlands are set to start their campaign in Group F against Japan on 14 June.
Simons' injury is a significant blow for both his club and country. His absence will undoubtedly be felt in the coming months as both Tottenham and the Netherlands navigate crucial fixtures without him. It remains to be seen how both teams will adapt to this setback, but fans of both Spurs and the Dutch national team will surely miss Simons' presence on the pitch.
