Italian top flight becomes the latest league to sign a free-to-air agreement with a British broadcaster

Hot on the heels of ITV securing 10 La Liga matches per season to air for free on British television, One Football has agreed a deal with Serie A to show 38 live fixtures per season.

The free-to-air live streaming platform will air Serie A matches on Saturday evenings, as well as some midweek games. This latest agreement will be active alongside the more broad rights deal between the Italian top flight and broadcasting giant BT Sport.

Matches will be shown for free on the digial platform in the UK and Ireland throughout the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons as part of this new deal. Like all broadcasting rights deals involving Serie A, the negotiations were handled by its media rights partner Infront.

The first Serie A match shown on One Football was Saturday's clash between Lecce and Inter Milan, which the visitors won 2-1.

Luigi de Servio, Chief Executive of Serie A, said of the deal:

“We’re proud, together with OneFootball, to be broadening the reach and accessibility of Serie A around the world. We have no doubt that our upcoming seasons will offer many thrilling games and exciting highlights, now available for British and Irish fans to enjoy.”

This agreement is the latest between the Italian top flight and One Football as Serie A recently signed on to launch video clip collectible NFTs through a partnership with the digital platform. One Football also produces highlights of every Serie A match of the season on its platforms, as the relationship between the two continues to grow.

Nikolaus von Doetinchem, Vice President of OTT Streaming and Media Rights at OneFootball, added:

“At OneFootball, we love Italian soccer, and are equally passionate about bringing fans around the world closer to the clubs and leagues they love. This deal with Serie A is the latest in our growing portfolio of distribution deals and indicative of our mission to bring our young, mobile-first user base closer to the action. We know that Italy’s Serie A is renowned and much loved by fans across the globe. We can’t wait to bring fans in the UK and Ireland the highs and lows of this iconic league week in, week out.”

British football fans are being treated to more and more elite action on free-to-air television in the UK, with these latest La Liga and Serie A deals bolstering a growing free sports rights offering on British terrestrial TV.
