The top women's soccer league in the United States will be aired across multiple channels

The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) is set to expand its broadcasting reach following new agreements with ESPN, CBS, Amazon and Scripps. This move marks a significant shift from the league's previous exclusive deal with CBS Sports, which is due to expire at the end of the current campaign.

The NWSL, the top women's soccer league in the United States, had previously signed a three-year exclusivity deal with CBS Sports in 2020. During this partnership, NWSL matches were only available on CBS-owned networks, including local CBS stations, CBS Sports Network and Paramount+.

However, the new agreement will see NWSL games broadcast across multiple networks and streaming services. While this could potentially cause confusion for viewers, it is expected to significantly broaden the league's reach. The new broadcasting partners, ESPN, CBS and Amazon Prime, all have varying numbers of subscribers, offering the NWSL a wider audience. Scripps, another partner in the deal, owns dozens of local television stations across the country, further expanding the league's visibility.

Financial implications and future growth

While the exact financial details of the new deal have not been disclosed, it is expected to represent a substantial increase compared to the previous agreement with CBS Sports. The new deal is also anticipated to financially exceed broadcasting rights to the English Women’s Super League (WSL). The agreement will run for four years, expiring after the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

This new broadcasting deal comes at a time when the NWSL is experiencing significant growth. According to NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman, the league has seen a substantial increase in viewership in recent years. CBS Sports Network reported a 20% growth, while Paramount+’s coverage of the NWSL saw a 50% increase compared to the previous season.

Expansion on the horizon

As the league continues to grow, so does the number of teams. The NWSL plans to add three more expansion teams in the coming years, with new clubs in Boston, Utah and San Jose. The league also has plans to add one more expansion club in the near future, bringing the total number of NWSL teams to 16.

The new broadcasting deal represents a significant milestone for the NWSL. By partnering with ESPN, CBS, Amazon and Scripps, the league is set to reach a wider audience, potentially driving further growth and expansion in the coming years.
