Nottingham Forest has made a significant move in the transfer market by signing Brazilian midfielder, Douglas Luiz, from Juventus on a season-long loan. The deal comes with a conditional obligation to make it permanent next summer.
The 27-year-old player left Aston Villa last year to join Serie A club Juventus for £42.35m on a five-year contract. During his tenure at Villa, he made 204 appearances across all competitions and netted nine goals in 35 Premier League games during the 2023-24 season before his move to Italy.
Luiz expressed his enthusiasm about returning to the Premier League with Forest, citing that he could "see the ambition the club has". His first stint in the Premier League was with Manchester City back in 2017. However, he spent two seasons on loan in Spain with Girona before making his switch to Villa.
Douglas Luiz, Brazilian midfielder, said:
"I am so excited to start with the team and give my best for the shirt and the fans."
His departure from Villa Park after five years was necessitated by the club's need to comply with profit and sustainability rules (PSR), which required them cashing in on key players.
Nottingham Forest's busy transfer market
This acquisition is part of an active period for Nottingham Forest in the transfer market since manager Nuno Espirito Santo raised concerns about their recruitment process last week.
This summer has seen Nottingham Forest make significant investments in their squad, spending approximately £140m on seven players as they prepare for their participation in the upcoming Europa League season. Among these new additions are England Under-21 winger Omari Hutchinson, who was acquired from Ipswich Town for a fee of £37.5m.
They also signed midfielder James McAtee from Manchester City for a sum close to £30m. Earlier this week, the club welcomed Rennes striker Arnaud Kalimuendo, who arrived for an initial fee of around £26m. Douglas Luiz boasts an impressive career record, having played 18 times for Brazil and winning a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in August 2021. His experience and skills will undoubtedly be a valuable addition to Nottingham Forest as they prepare for their Europa League campaign.
