Real Madrid legend, Toni Kroos, is set to make his way to St James’ Park. The former Bayern Munich and Real Madrid powerhouse has been connecting with Newcastle United since his retirement from professional football last year.
Toni Kroos boasts an impressive career with 114 caps for Germany and significant contributions to both Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. After announcing his retirement last year, he has been enjoying life off the pitch. Amongst his interests these days is a podcast that he hosts with his brother Felix Kroos, also a former Bundesliga player who played for Union Berlin and Werder Bremen.
Their podcast ‘Einfach mal Luppen’ often features discussions about various football teams including Newcastle United. In late August, they expressed admiration for Newcastle United's performance against Liverpool despite being one man down. Toni Kroos singled out Dan Burn during their discussion of the match against Liverpool. He praised Burn as "a real pain…ten seconds before every corner and every throw-in, he pushed everyone at least once.” So impressed by what he had seen, Toni jokingly declared; “Newcastle stuck with it. I’m going to sign up as a Newcastle United member today.”
Warm welcome from Newcastle United
Following their podcast mentions of NUFC (Newcastle United Football Club), the club responded by sending them a "nice package" which included personalised black-and-white replica shirts along with a personal message from Dan Burn thanking them for their kind words on the podcast.
The brothers have now revealed on their podcast that they intend to travel to St James’ Park for a match in response to this warm welcome from NUFC. Felix announced; “We can announce that we are now officially members of Newcastle United,” while Toni added; “We are officially Magpies.”
This positive interaction comes as a breath of fresh air amidst some controversy involving Bayern Munich figures expressing dissatisfaction after Newcastle United outbid them to sign Nick Woltemade. It's refreshing to hear a real Bayern Munich and Germany legend like Toni Kroos speak so positively about NUFC.
