Former England and Tottenham striker, Gary Lineker, has singled out one Arsenal player who could potentially derail the Gunners' title hopes. According to Lineker, Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres needs to start finding the back of the net more frequently if Arsenal are to maintain their lead in the Premier League.
Currently, Arsenal is leading the pack in the Premier League standings. After a weekend full of action-packed matches, they sit three points clear of second-placed Manchester City and four points ahead of Liverpool who occupy third place. This is a significant turnaround for Arne Slot’s side which was trailing five points behind Liverpool just three games ago.
Despite being on a four-match losing streak across all competitions, Arsenal managed to secure a 1-0 victory against Fulham last Saturday. This win marked their sixth triumph in eight Premier League matches this season and solidified their command over the title race.
Goal scoring dilemma
However, despite these impressive results on paper, there have been concerns about Arsenal's goal-scoring ability from open play. Out of their 15 goals this season so far, ten have come from set-pieces - an imbalance that has drawn criticism from fans and pundits alike.
Summer signing Viktor Gyokeres finds himself at the center of this debate due to his lackluster performance upfront. Having scored only three goals in eight games since joining Arsenal and failing to score for club or country since September 13 against Nottingham Forest - his contribution has been underwhelming.
Lineker's warning
Lineker insists that Gyokeres will need to step up his game if he wants to help secure a Premier League title for his team. He believes that unless Gyokeres starts scoring soon, he could prove costly for Arteta’s side's championship aspirations.
Gary Lineker, Premier League legend, said:
“He (Gyokeres) is going through a bit of a bad spell. Seven games in all competitions without a goal. I think for Arsenal to really realise their ambitions, he’s going to have to start scoring a lot of goals. I think it’s a big spell coming up for him over the next few games.”
As sports fans and sports betting enthusiasts watch the unfolding drama of this season's Premier League closely, it remains to be seen whether Gyokeres will rise up to the challenge or become a stumbling block in Arsenal's path towards glory.
