Movistar Plus, a Spanish pay-TV broadcaster owned by Telefonica, has extended its domestic rights deal for the country's Super Cup men's soccer tournament. The four-team mini competition will continue to be shown domestically by the Spanish broadcaster through 2027-28.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Spain's national soccer federation, announced last week that Movistar would remain the exclusive broadcaster of the four-team competition for three more seasons – 2025-26, 2026-27, and 2027-28. The teams consist of LaLiga’s top two sides and the finalists from Copa del Rey domestic knockout cup competition.
Previously in late 2022, RFEF sold rights for the cycle from 2022-23 to 2024-25 bundled with a package of Copa del Rey matches rights which were purchased by Movistar Plus.
High asking price set by National Body
In recent cycles, RFEF set a high asking price for broadcasting rights to Super Cup matches. These matches are now contested by four teams instead of two over three games in Saudi Arabia. In May last year when they launched their tender for domestic rights (alongside those to Spain's third division men’s football), only one package was available at an average cost of €6.5 million ($7.3 million) per season.
Upon confirming Movistar as its broadcast partner again, RFEF stated: "Year after year viewership has broken previous records making this final one of our most-watched matches on this platform." This is testament to how popular these games have become among fans; Barcelona won against Real Madrid with a scoreline of 5:2 in Saudi Arabia during the mini-tournament final of the 2024-25 Super Cup.
In January, it was revealed that RFEF has been in talks to continue staging the Supercopa de España competition in Saudi Arabia until 2034. The current agreement between the Kingdom and RFEF is not due to expire until 2029, but both parties are keen on a five-year extension. The Super Cup was moved to Saudi Arabia in 2020, a deal reportedly worth more than €40 million ($41 million) per year. Five out of six editions of this competition have been staged in the Kingdom since then, with an exception made for 2021 due to Covid-19 pandemic when it was held back home in Spain.
