Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, subtly jabbed at Real Madrid during a recent press conference while discussing the future of William Saliba at the Emirates Stadium. This comes after Saliba agreed to a new contract with Arsenal, much to Arteta's delight.
Saliba has been an exceptional performer since his debut in the Gunners side in the 2022/23 season. His world-class performance sparked interest from several clubs, including Real Madrid. However, when asked about this rumoured interest from Spain, Arteta made it clear that Saliba had always assured him of his desire to stay with Arsenal.
Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, said:
“When you hear that noise you can understand certain expectations. Players have feelings, maybe dreaming about something one day, and that’s a really natural thing to have. When I sat down with William and I asked him the question, he said: ‘No, I want to stay here, I want to play for you and I’m very happy’ – in his own way – so that’s great to hear.”
Arteta then cheekily commented that there aren't many teams capable of luring Saliba away from Arsenal. This statement can be seen as a sly dig at Real Madrid over their failed attempt to sign the French international.
Major boost for Arsenal
The new contract agreement between William Saliba and Arsenal is indeed great news for the club and its fans. Following other recent deals for star players like Gabriel Magalhaes, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri, securing Saliba is certainly a significant boost for Arsenal.
At just 24 years old, he has shown potential that could see him start for virtually any club globally. He is expected to play an essential role in shaping Arsenal's future success.
Impact of solid defence on team performance
Alongside Gabriel in central defence, Saliba has been instrumental in transforming this squad into a more solid unit than they have been in years past. It wasn't long ago when AFC was considered somewhat weak defensively; however now few teams can break them down easily.
While much credit goes towards Arteta’s coaching methods which have significantly improved the team's defensive tactics, it is also crucial to have the right players. Saliba, with his youth and potential for improvement, fits this bill perfectly.
Arteta's happiness over Saliba's contract renewal is understandable given the player’s significant contribution to Arsenal’s improved defence. This move not only secures a talented player for Arsenal but also sends a clear message to other clubs about their resolve in retaining their star performers.
