The Bank of Scotland has unveiled a limited edition £20 note, featuring an image inspired by Scott McTominay's famous overhead kick. This unique banknote is part of the celebrations marking Scotland's return to the World Cup after qualifying for the men's international tournament for the first time since 1998.
The design of this special banknote seamlessly combines traditional elements with imagery capturing McTominay’s goal against Denmark. It serves as a tangible reminder of that momentous occasion when Scotland secured their place at the World Cup with a 4-2 win over Denmark at Hampden Park in Glasgow last November. McTominay, who scored the first goal early in that game with his now-iconic overhead kick, expressed his excitement about this honour.
Scott McTominay, Scotland player, said:
"Reaching the biggest stage of world football is something every player dreams of, and I know it means everything to our fans.
"Moments like that belong to everyone who follows the team, so seeing my goal featured on a Scottish banknote feels incredibly special."
Limited edition notes
Only 100 copies have been printed, making these notes highly sought-after collector items. Fifty will be available through various channels including collector auctions, a prize draw, and two pop-up areas in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Proceeds from auction sales and prize draws will go towards supporting Crisis Scotland - a national charity dedicated to helping people experiencing homelessness. Fans can participate in an online auction running until 11:00 on Friday 26 June or enter into a prize draw until that same time. Additionally, fans visiting pop-up areas in Glasgow and Edinburgh can try their luck guessing combinations to open vaults containing some of these limited edition notes.
Scotland’s return to international prominence comes just ahead of an expanded format for the World Cup 2026 which will feature 48 teams. The tournament will be played from 11 June to 19 July in 16 cities across the US, Canada, and Mexico. Scotland's national team is set to face Haiti on 14 June and Morocco on 19 June in Boston, followed by Brazil on 24 June in Miami. As fans eagerly anticipate these matches, the McTominay £20 note serves as a symbol of Scotland's triumphant return to the World Cup stage.
