Manchester City had earlier agreed on personal terms and outlined an £80 million deal to sign Paqueta last summer

Manchester City is reportedly considering a bargain £30m move to sign Brazilian midfielder Lucas Paqueta, following his clearance of all betting and spot-fixing charges. The Premier League star's future could take a decisive turn with this development.

Lucas Paqueta’s long and uncertain wait for clarity has ended. As reported, West Ham was informed of the decision on Friday evening ahead of an official confirmation. This news brings both relief and a moment of decision for West Ham.

Paqueta, who joined from Lyon for a club-record £51 million in 2022, has consistently delivered with 18 goals and 14 assists across 120 games. However, his future now seems to lie elsewhere as interest from other clubs mounts.

Manchester City's resurfaced admiration

Manchester City had previously shown interest in signing Paqueta last summer with personal terms agreed upon and an £80 million deal outlined. The transfer collapsed due to the FA’s investigation into alleged gambling breaches involving the player.

With Kevin De Bruyne’s departure, Pep Guardiola faces the task of restructuring his midfield. Matheus Nunes' failure to establish himself centrally has left room for a versatile playmaker like Paqueta who would add guile and edge to the team already brimming with attacking talent. The numbers also add intrigue as reports suggest that “the £80m fee they previously agreed is likely to be more than halved if they do return.” The Daily Mail went further suggesting that West Ham are now open to a deal around £30 million making him one of the most attractive options on the market at present.

At age 27, with experience in Premier League footballing brain sharpness coupled with motivation ahead of the 2026 World Cup, Paqueta represents a low-risk, high-upside investment.

Options on the table

West Ham is already preparing for life without him. With Mohammed Kudus sold to Tottenham, David Moyes’ midfield has been gutted. If Paqueta leaves too, replacements must arrive swiftly with James McAtee from City being one potential solution.

Saudi Pro League clubs are also monitoring Paqueta’s situation.  Manchester City will not be alone in this chase but with the Brazilian now cleared and his asking price significantly reduced, revisiting a previously agreed deal seems logical.
