Liverpool Football Club have successfully secured a £60m deal for Rennes defender, Jeremy Jacquet. However, the 20-year-old centre-half will not be joining the club in the current transfer window.
The clubs have reached an agreement on a £55m fee plus an additional £5m in add-ons. Subject to a medical examination, Jacquet is set to move to Liverpool in the summer. Personal terms are not expected to pose any issues with this France Under-21 international player.
Despite Chelsea having held talks with Jacquet during the winter window, they have decided not to match Liverpool's bid.
Strengthening centre-back options
Liverpool is keen on strengthening their centre-back options. This move comes as Ibrahima Konate's current contract with Liverpool is set to expire at the end of this season. The French defender's future at Anfield remains uncertain and acquiring Jacquet could be seen as a strategic move by Arne Slot’s side.
Last summer, Liverpool missed out on Marc Guehi who opted instead for Manchester City in January. This makes securing Jacquet even more significant for bolstering their defence line-up. Jeremy Jacquet has proven his worth through his performances at Rennes academy where he was trained and nurtured into becoming one of Europe's promising defenders. He has played 18 times this season alone for Rennes and his standout performances have made him a target among some of Europe’s elite sides.
Liverpool sees him as more than just another player; they see him as a long-term investment that can bring value and strength to their team over time. While fans may need to wait until summer before seeing Jeremy Jacquet donning reds jersey on field, there is no doubt that his addition will significantly enhance Liverpool’s defensive prowess.
