La Liga president Javier Tebas has expressed his hope that Manchester United's on-loan forward, Mason Greenwood, will continue to play in Spanish football after his current spell with Getafe concludes.
Greenwood joined Getafe on loan on deadline day in September 2023 following an internal investigation into his conduct at Manchester United.
The investigation was triggered by the collapse of a legal case against him. Initially, Manchester United had planned to keep the striker at the club but later decided it would be better for him to play elsewhere.
Despite this decision and strong hints that Greenwood would never play for them again, recent comments from United's new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe suggest a potential reconsideration of the situation.
Tebas says La Liga is in no place to judge Mason Greenwood
Speaking at the Financial Times Business of Football Conference in London, La Liga president Tebas referenced his legal background while discussing Greenwood’s situation.
He stated he had no interest in judging Greenwood and emphasized that he viewed the 22-year-old as "innocent" since charges against him were dropped.
Javier Tebas, president of La Liga, said:
"I am a lawyer. If someone came out of a legal case innocent there is nothing else to say." He further added: "He is doing well as a player and I hope he continues to stay in Spanish football."
When asked about this matter further, Tebas insisted that if a player had not been condemned legally, it was not La Liga’s place to judge them.
Investigation launched after Jude Bellingham comment towards Greenwood
Greenwood has shown impressive performances during his time with Getafe so far - scoring seven goals and providing five assists across 25 appearances this season.
However, controversy arose when Real Madrid star player Jude Bellingham allegedly made an inappropriate comment towards Greenwood during their match on February 1st.
The incident occurred after Bellingham tackled Greenwood during Real's 2-0 win, and a clip of the incident went viral on social media.
La Liga is currently investigating the formal complaint made about the altercation by Greenwood's club Getafe.
The investigation includes an expert lip-reading report but has yet to be concluded. Some media reports suggest that Greenwood wants the investigation to be dropped.
