Action involving the likes of PSG, Lille, Monaco and Lyon is available to British football fans
Lille shocked the world last season when they won the French top flight title, tipping favourites PSG to the crown by one point. The Qatari backed giants had only failed to the win the title once in the previous eight years, when Monaco interrupted their domination in 2016-17. Suffice to say nobody expected Lille to pull off the same feat in the 2020-21 season but they did. A squad full of misfits were inspired to play above their level by manager Christophe Galtier, who surprisingly chose to leave at the end of the season and join Nice. Renato Sanches has revitalised his career during the last two seasons in France after a disappointing spell in English football. Relatively young goalkeeper Mike Maignan hugely impressed and has since been snapped up by AC Milan to replace their outgoing goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Most shocking of all was journeyman forward Burak Yilmaz scoring 16 goals in 28 Ligue 1 games, many of them key in the team's journey to the title. It was a similar story to the Leicester City one of a few years back but arguably more impressive given the gulf in quality between Lille and the dominant force in the league, PSG.
As exciting as last season was, it is extremely unlikely that we will see a repeat this time around. Lille have already lost two key players from that squad in Mike Maignan and Boubakary Soumaré and other departures are expected. Renato Sanches and Jonathan David are both high on the list at many elite clubs and the champions will struggle to keep them. Fallen giants PSG, on the other hand, have had arguably the best transfer window of any club in the history of football. They've bought in Achraf Hakimi from Inter Milan for €60m which in itself is good business but the real miracle has been in signing four of the world's very best players for €0 in transfer fees. The aforementioned Gianluigi Donnarumma joins on a free from AC Milan, meaning that the club now has two of the best goalkeepers on the planet. Gigi Wijnaldum comes in from Liverpool, also on a free to bolster their already scary midfield. Sergio Ramos will move into the centre back position, joining on a free transfer from Real Madrid. Last but certainly not least, the club managed to capitalise on Barcelona's nightmarish financial situation by landing the best player of all time Lionel Messi on a free transfer - hard to believe but true. With the squad PSG now possess they will rightly feel that winning their first ever Champions League is a foregone conclusion and to not win Ligue 1 would be seen as an absolute disaster.
So, the French top flight may not have the most unpredictable of title races this season but it does have many of the world's greatest players all in one place and with a point to prove. If that doesn't get people interested in Ligue 1, nothing will.
